<p>However, for now, I am vacationing and graduating from grad school and will be unable to post until Monday the 18th.</p>

We started it just after we received our 501c3 determination last September, and we blog whatever we&#8217;ve experienced on the journey since then, including:</p>

<li>the <a href="http://epicchange.org/blog/2008/04/09/joshua/">inspirations for our work</a>, and</li>

<p>We try to give a complete, transparent picture of what we&#8217;re working on so that our supporters can feel engaged in what we&#8217;re doing, and so other folks can learn from our mistakes and successes.  We also try to provide regular opportunities on our blog for folks to get involved.  Last week, for instance, to celebrate National Volunteer Week, we provided daily opportunities for our readers to perform 10-minute volunteer activities.</p>

<p><strong>About the Author:</strong></p>
<p>I’m a nerd, a recovering military brat, a perpetual nomad and a total sap.  I believe the world is what we make it.  I started my career managing a performing arts series, moved into public sector consulting for Deloitte, then worked in IT strategy &amp; change leadership at Genentech and, finally, launched a small change management consulting firm called Funken Consulting.  Last year, I left for Africa, came back, stopped working for money &amp; founded Epic Change, a nonprofit that “helps hopeful people in need tell their epic true stories to acquire the resources they need to create change in their communities.”  I have a BA in Philosophy and a grad degree in performing arts management from the public policy school at Carnegie Mellon. <p><strong>If you could live on any street, what would that street be named and why?</strong></p>
<p><strong><em><span style="color:#800000;">I&#8217;d live where Hope, Audacity, Authenticity, &amp; Gratitude intersect because I know I&#8217;d like the other people who live there. [This is my favorite quote of the week!]</span></em></strong></p>
<p><strong>Who would be your dream real-life neighbor?</strong></p>
<p>Any man who can sing. For today, let&#8217;s say John Mayer.  His song <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTpy_L1dALA">Say</a> is stuck on my brain.  Or maybe Josh Groban.  His voice makes me feel like I’m in the presence of an angel.</p>
<p><strong>If you were in charge of the planning the neighborhood&#8217;s block party, what entertainment would you plan?</strong></p>
<p>Ditto, previous question.  Or I&#8217;d plan a performance by a dance troupe that I love like Alvin Ailey or Momix.  Or we&#8217;d dance ourselves, which might be the most fun.  Despite my chubbiness, I love to dance.  I&#8217;m certified to teach ZUMBA and Shake Your Soul.<strong></strong></p>
<p><strong>If you customized your own license plate, what would it say and why?</strong></p>

<p><strong>What would you gift to a new neighbor as the perfect welcoming gift?</strong></p>
<p>Blueberry Pie.  Despite 1950s connotations, pies = love.<strong></strong></p>
<p><strong>What&#8217;s your favorite blog post and why?</strong></p>
<p>I&#8217;d like to point to something brilliant by someone else, because I’ve taken so much as inspiration.  Right now, today, though, I&#8217;m really wrapped up in what&#8217;s unfolding as a result of my recent, totally random, <a href="http://gobigalways.com/guest-post-stacey-monk-goes-big/">guest post on the Go Big Always blog</a> of Jive CMO Sam Lawrence.  I met him totally randomly on <a href="http://twitter.com/StaceyMonk">Twitter</a>, and last Wednesday after midnight, when he was tweeting that he didn’t feel like posting to his uber-popular marketing blog, I offered to take his place.  He, probably in jest, wrote back “Go for it ;)” and I did.  That single post has led to a flurry of others, including <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/Howlett/?p=384">one on ZDNet</a>, a tweet by <a href="http://twitter.com/Scobleizer">@Scobleizer</a>, and a connection to social media giant Jeremiah Owyang, as well as a drastic increase in the number of people interested in our cause.  So for today, the <a href="http://gobigalways.com/guest-post-stacey-monk-goes-big/">Go Big Always post</a> is surely my fave, despite the fact that it begins with a reference to feces.</p>

<p>Until today, I did not know what a meme was or is. I&#8217;m pretty excited though, now that I know what it is, as I&#8217;m always looking for new ways to evolve the style of blog posts. <p>A meme is like an internet chain letter, with depth. One blogger posts a topic or call to action, then tags 5-10 other people to follow suite and add to the &#8216;meme.&#8217; This being my first tag in a meme, I am participating. Plus, I was pretty excited about the book nearest me&#8230;</p>
<p>Here is what I am supposed to do:</p>
<p>1. Pick up the nearest book.<br />
2. Open to page 123.<br />
3. Find the fifth sentence.<br />
4. Post the next three sentences.<br />
5. <p>It&#8217;s titled: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/What-Know-Now-Letters-Younger/dp/0767917898"><strong>What I Know Now, Letters to My Younger Self</strong></a>, written by a collaboration of accomplished and amazing women. Contributers include <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madeleine_Albright">Madeleine Albright</a>, <a href="http://www.mayaangelou.com/">Maya Angelou</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ann_Curry">Ann Curry</a>, Olmypia Dukakis, and many more! This book is great, because women need role models and mentors. This<strong> <span style="color:#993366;">book offers just a glimpse into some of the more important <em>LIFE</em> lessons we learn along our journey.</span></strong></p>
<p>When I&#8217;m finished reading, I plan on writing my own letter to my older self, and  store it away to read at a later date. And another letter to my younger self, that I hope to one day pass on to a future daughter. <em>This idea is what I&#8217;d like to forward in my version of the meme.</em></p>
<p>Not wanting to be a <em>complete</em> rule breaker though&#8230;this is what I found:</p>
<p>Page 123 was part of the letter Jane Bryant Quinn, author and columnist, writes to herself about parenting and what&#8217;s she learned from her kids. But, I preferred to share one of my favorite excerpts from the book instead, written by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_Buffett">Susie Buffet,</a> daughter of Warren Buffet, written back to her 17 year old self, about her admiration for her mother.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;Empathy has led her [Susie's mother] to become extraordinarily accepting of others, but it&#8217;s also what makes her comfortable with acting unconventionally&#8230;Empathy doesn&#8217;t have to lead you to the routes she [mom] will follow, which may be a temptation, given your resemblance to her. <div>I am a social marketing believer, blogger, researcher, practitioner and enthusiast. Social marketing for good - not to be confused with social media marketing. Currently, my day job is a graduate student at the <a href="http://journalism.missouri.edu/">University of Missouri&#8217;s School of Journalism</a> where I will graduate this month. In June, I will start full-time at the social marketing firm I&#8217;ve been completing a fellowship at in Washington D.C., working on the client team representing the <a href="http://www.nida.nih.gov/">National Institute on Drug Abuse</a>. As of this moment, I am defending my thesis, graduating and taking a moment to breath, =).</p>

<p>Academics and work aside, my passion is working with and on behalf of nonprofits. My family, myself and a small group of dedicated and committed individuals started a non-profit in Arkansas that benefits multiple sclerosis and works in partnership with the <a href="http://www.nationalmssociety.org/index.aspx">MS Society</a>. In one year, with about eight people, no budget and two main events, we&#8217;ve raised over $275k.<span style="color:#3366ff;"><strong></strong></span></div>

<div><span style="color:#3366ff;"><strong>2.   Tell me about your thesis.</strong></span></div>

<div>Just the word &#8216;thesis&#8217; seems to make eyes glaze over, so I&#8217;ll try to keep this interesting. What influences you in the actions you take? the opinions or attitudes you hold? What shapes how you feel? Is it CNN broadcasting live, yahoo news feeds, a blog, your next door neighbor, or a guest lecturer? I&#8217;m supposing that it&#8217;s all the above and more. My research looks at the media landscape and the concept of influence and how this affects the public agenda&#8230;.and within this mess and shades of gray, how and where the practice of social marketing fits in. I suggest social marketing offers us an opportunity to work collaboratively, erase divisions and provides a platform for those with similar motivations - doing good - to unite across industry fields, and thus, be more effective and successful.</div>

You&#8217;re a digital native (I am guessing .. <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':-)' class='wp-smiley' />  Millennial or whatever .. so, from your perspective in seeing various campaigns launched by nonprofits that use social media strategies, what are they doing right?  What do they need to improve to appeal to folks like you?</strong></span></div>

<div>Understandably, there are many questions about branching into social media and concerns about it being unregulated. But, I suggest, to just jump in. If not your organization, then you as the marketing/communications/outreach person. You, yourself, need to be familiar with new communication channels. I appreciate the digital native label&#8230;.but I am constantly finding new applications and new strategies that online technology offers. So new or accustomed, there&#8217;s always more to learn.</div>

<div><span style="color:#3366ff;"><strong>4.  Why do you think it is important for nonprofits to embrace social media?</strong></span></div>

<div>For the same reasons why it is important for you to get to know your neighbors. Or, to teach your child how to change a tire. It just makes sense to know what&#8217;s out there and how it can be used.<span style="color:#3366ff;"><strong></strong></span></div>

<div><span style="color:#3366ff;"><strong>5.   What practical advice would you offer a nonprofit just dipping their toes in the social media waters?</strong></span></div>
<div></div>

Best practical tip, create a relatively simple, but not hackable password and keep it the same for all the accounts you are going to create. This stays true for the ID/name you create for your accounts. You&#8217;re identity still needs to be consistent, and practically, it helps you keep track and manage your online relationships.</div>

<p>Next, do a social media scan of your non-profit and/or cause using Technorati or a Google blog search. There are also social media apps that help you track keywords in the blogosphere. How can you know how to help further a cause, meet needs, etc., if you do not know what people are saying or how people currently perceive your organization/message?</p>

<p>Also last week, another report was published by the <a href="http://www.sciam.com/">Scientific American Magazine</a> that looked at the concept of Science 2.0, titled &#8220;<a href="http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=science-2-point-0&amp;print=true">Is Open-Access Science the future?</a>&#8220;</p>
<p><strong>About</strong><a href="http://fly4change.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/algemeenadministrator1img1.jpg"><img class="alignright alignnone size-medium wp-image-135" style="float:right;margin:10px;" src="http://fly4change.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/algemeenadministrator1img1.jpg?w=252&h=252" alt="" width="252" height="252" /></a></p>
<p>Before this article was published, the author put the <a href="http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=science-2-point-0-great-new-tool-or-great-risk">draft version</a> of the article in a wiki, and encouraged readers&#8217; comments and edits&#8230;to help formulate the articles final version.</p>
<p>In this article, the author looks at the increasing use of social media within marketing, journalism, and politics - and how it can spread to the field of science, as more researchers increase their use of web 2.0 tools within their research. Some critics think that this new process to scientific discovery curbs the traditional institutional lines and poses danger. Advocates see Science 2.0 as a way to increase openness and collaboration across studies - furthering progress</p>
<p><strong>Science 2.0</strong></p>
<p>Science 2.0 refers to the growing movement of integrating social media into the scientific process and its promotion. Science 2.0 is a component of the broader Open Science movement according to the author of the article, M. Mitchell Waldrop. This Open Science Movement includes other topics such as open-access scientific publishing and open-data practices.</p>
<p><strong>Case Study</strong></p>
<p>The article points to a success project named <a href="http://openwetware.org/wiki/Main_Page">OpenWetWare</a> at MIT, which:</p>
<blockquote><p><big>&#8220;<a href="http://openwetware.org/wiki/Main_Page">OpenWetWare</a></big> is an effort to promote the sharing of information, know-how, and wisdom among researchers and groups who are working in biology &amp; biological engineering. OWW provides a place for labs, individuals, and groups to organize their own information and collaborate with others easily and efficiently.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p><a href="http://openwetware.org/wiki/Main_Page">OpenWetWare</a> now hosts more than 15 labs, 6100 web pages and is edited by 3000 registered users. <p><strong>Concerns</strong></p>
<p>Due to the content of this budding use of technology, in that it is labeled &#8217;science&#8217; brings many concerns to critics minds. These include:</p>

<li>Privacy Concerns</li>
<li>Authorship and Copyright</li>
<li>Looking &#8216;unprofessional&#8217;</li>
<li>Undermining the field of &#8217;science&#8217;</li>
<li>Trust-worthiness of information and hackers</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Future</strong></p>
<p>Despite concerns, advocates see Science 2.0 as still in its launching point. Future ideas for implementing Science 2.0 include:</p>

<li>online lab journals</li>
<li>Developing internet-friendly lab equipment</li>
<li>Virtual scientific conferences</li>
<li>Virtual Labs</li>
<li>Updated Lab &#8216;feeds&#8217;</li>
<li>Data-Sharing</li>
<li>Truth-Based Social Marketing</li>

<p><span style="color:#339966;"> If you customized your own license plate, what would it say and why?</span> In fact, I do have a customized license plate. It reads <strong>TLFC</strong>.  My wife, exasperated with all my spiritual striving in Zen and elsewhere once asked me, &#8220;Why don&#8217;t you ever just take life as it #$%*&amp; comes?&#8221;  This struck me as an inspired formulation for a good life, something we could agree on, thus the plate.  Please don&#8217;t tell the state of Colorado Motor Vehicles Department, though. On the form applying for the plate I said the letters stood for &#8220;<strong>Take Life as it Fully Comes.</strong>&#8221;  Either way, I like it.</p>

<p>Because of statistics like those above, the concept of &#8216;Health 2.0&#8242; has increased its usage and importance. Simply, Health 2.0 = the merging of social media into healthcare. However, <a href="http://health20.org/wiki/Health_2.0_Definition">others</a> see the movement of Health 2.0 as something much wider and farther reaching. Even <a href="http://images.google.com/images?q=health%202.0%20definition&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=utf-8&amp;rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&amp;client=firefox-a&amp;um=1&amp;sa=N&amp;tab=wi">Google image searching</a> shows a variety of more complex definitions. I&#8217;d be interested to see how you all define it for yourselves or for your practice.</p>

<p>Health 2.0 researchers warn that patients should be cautious about posting personal health-related information through unsecured social media as health insurance providers could gain access to this information, as well as potential employers.</p>

<p>A word appears and asks you to define it.  Every definition you correctly identify donates 20 grains of rice.  You&#8217;re intriguing the mind, using social media tools AND giving. Talk about collaborative innovation.</p>
<p>There are 55 different vocabulary levels, with customized options for your own vocabulary growth&#8230;the site says that most people don&#8217;t get beyond level 48. Will you be the one to reach level 55?!?</p>
<p>The words are also constantly evaluated on their difficulty level depending on how many people get the word right or wrong and new words are always being added.</p>
<p><strong>Why</strong></p>
<p>Free Rice also lists many reasons why its encourages the development of vocabulary as part of its mission in its <a href="http://www.freerice.com/faq.html">FAQ section of its website</a>. They include:</p>

<p><strong>Who Finances The Donation?</strong></p>
<p>According to the site, the site&#8217;s advertisers are the ones who actually pay for the rice to be donated. And, the site itself does not run a profit. Thus, you play, advertisers pay to be listed on the site, that money funds the rice donation.</p>
<p><strong>Distribution</strong></p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.wfp.org/english/">United Nations World Food Program</a> (WFP) distributes the rice. The WFP works with over 1,000 organizations in over 75 countries, making it the world&#8217;s largest food aid agency. When possible, WFP buys the food through the local growers and economy.</p>
<p><strong>Results</strong></p>

<p><span style="color:#339966;"><strong>About the Author:</strong></span> I am the Director of Communications and Technology for the <a href="http://www.artsfoundationcapecod.org/">Arts Foundation of Cape Cod</a>. After graduating from Mount Holyoke College, I pursued graduate studies in geology at Syracuse University.  When I was 28, I bought a nightclub, euphemistically known as a &#8220;live-musicvenue,&#8221; in upstate New York and operated that for several years before returning to Cape Cod in 2002. I then worked for several years as a freelance editor for Random House Publishing, Sterling Publishing, and several scientific academic journals, and served as the Director of Communications for the Harwich Junior Theater before joining the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod in 2006.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been in communications since 1997, nonprofit communications since 2004, and I&#8217;ve been blogging since about 2003. I started blogging on a personal blog, and quickly branched out into writing weekly columns for several humor blogs (all of which are now sadly defunct). I&#8217;m a darn good public speaker, an enthusiastic baseball fan (but not for the team you would expect), and an ex-professional chef.  I am also an expert sock-knitter.  Yes, expert.</p>
<p><span style="color:#339966;"><strong> What&#8217;s one lesson you&#8217;ve learned from blogging? </strong></span> Be yourself.  You can be no other.</p>
<p><span style="color:#339966;"><strong>If you c</strong><strong>ould lived on any street, which street would you live on and why? </strong></span> Perry Lane.  It&#8217;s the dirt road on which my great-grandfather&#8217; s house still sits &#8212; an 1840 farmhouse on Cape Cod, only a few miles from where I live now.  My grandfather had to sell it a few years ago, and none of us had the scratch to buy it from him at the time.  I&#8217;d love to buy it back from the (very nice) folks who bought it, and then settle there.  I mean, those ghosts are MY ghosts.</p>
<p><strong><span style="color:#339966;"> Who would be your dream real-life neighbor?</span> </strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Lamott">Annie LaMott</a>.  She&#8217;s one of my favorite writers; she writes great fiction AND great non-fiction on the subject of writing, and I think we would make terrific neighbors.  We have a lot in common, including a certain level of neuroticism, and a peculiar sense of humor.</p>
<p><span style="color:#339966;"><strong>Why do you blog?</strong></span> I&#8217;m a compulsive blogger, and I have been since I first started in 2003.  I love to write, and I love how blogging keeps my writing skills sharp.  I love the community of people that I have met through writing a blog and reading blogs. <p><strong><span style="color:#339966;"> What&#8217;s your favorite blog post and why? </span></strong> The one where I compared CEOs (those who are averse to social media) to the Tiv tribe in Africa: <a href="http://smalldots.wordpress.com/2008/01/12/lost-in-translation-social-media-and-hamlet/">Lost in Translation - Social Media and Hamlet</a>.  I was remembering that old Intro to Anthropology essay that we all had to read, about the young anthropologist who believes that Hamlet is universal and transcends cultural differences, and she faces hysterical obstacles in her quest to translate it to the indigenous population she is working with in Africa.  I like it because it&#8217;s typical of the way I think, drawing strange metaphors and parallels from seemingly unrelated disciplines.  It&#8217;s what we liberal arts college graduates are best at, I think.</p>
